Outbound MLA requests

MLA requests in South Africa often require lengthy processing times, sometimes spanning years. In its February 2024 update, the FATF highlighted the need for South Africa to increase outbound MLA requests and timely follow-ups to aid in money laundering and terrorist financing investigations and asset confiscations. Aligned with the International Cooperation on Criminal Matters Act, South Africa is party to various international conventions and agreements emphasising the importance of mutual legal assistance in combating transnational crime. These agreements include the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and its protocols, as well as regional agreements within the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
