The Boegoebaai hydrogen project has been classified as the strategic integrated project.The pre-feasibility study by Sasol is complete and subsequently appointed Mizuho International as a financial advisor to find partners to co-invest and complete further studies into the project.A strategic environmental assessment has been initiated and led by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for the project.A draft master plan has been developed with initial engagements with various stakeholders under way.A financial adviser has been appointed to assist Sasol in a search for potential investors in a green hydrogen and ammonia export hub at Boegoebaai, in the Northern Cape, following the completion of a pre-feasibility study into the site’s potential.

Are there plans?

The National Development Plan 2030 classified the Boegoebaai development as a strategic integrated project and an industrial development project.Transnet National Ports Authority is also working toward developing port and rail infrastructure at Boegoebaai.A number of agreements have been signed in support of the project: - Memorandum of agreement (MoA) between the Northern Cape and Sasol to be an anchor developer of the planned Boegoebaai Green Hydrogen Special Economic Zone.
- MoA between the Northern Cape and the Port of Rotterdam (POR) for the POR to act as a demand aggregator for green hydrogen into Europe.
- MoA between Gauteng and Sasol - the company is to develop green hydrogen facilities in the province.

Forms part of the industrial development project and a strategic integrated project in the National Development Plan 2030.
