The National Water Crisis Committee (Watercon), similar to the National Energy Crisis Committee, was formed in March to oversee implementation of the National Water Action Plan, which was published by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 23 July 2026. It has five specific workstreams with the overall aims of providing central oversight, preventing duplication, ensuring accountability and accelerating project delivery.

With the National Water Action Plan published, teams from Watercon have been appointed to drive each of the five main workstreams: address challenges in municipal water and sanitation delivery; accelerate reforms to address the systemic causes of the water crisis; increase investment in infrastructure, including through private sector investment; explore legal and regulatory mechanisms to improve municipal service delivery; and address corruption and criminality in the water sector.
